  Reg Toze QP

Vale Reg Toze, 25/03/36 - 22/10/20

Mike Toze writes: Reg learnt to ring at Bampton, in Devon, in 1950 and emigrated to Brisbane in 1964.

Reg Toze

He was very much involved with the teaching of ringers at St John's Cathedral when the bells were installed for full circle ringing in 1988, and was ringing master during these early years. It was later realised that when the temporary west end north tower - where the bells were installed - was replaced with a permanent structure, it would not be suitable for the bells. He campaigned vigorously for them to be installed in the central tower and augmented to 12. Although he already had started suffering from Parkinson’s in 2008 he was able to be in the band for the first ring of the 12 bells in the central tower.

In the late 1990s and early 2000s he travelled regularly to Western Australia to visit his eldest son and took the opportunity to "score some towers". He was a regular attendee to ANZAB festivals during this period. He had to retire from ringing in 2009 and was made an Honorary Life Member of ANZAB in that year.

A quarter peal was rung in celebration of the life of Reg, with many of Reg's family attending in the body of the cathedral and greeting the band (shown at right) afterwards.

Brisbane Ringing resumes

Limited ringing has resumed. At the cathedral, service ringing and Monday practices are back in operation. There is a Ringing Room virtual practice on Tuesday at 6.30 pm instead of the usual St Andrew's practice. Visitors must contact the tower captains in advance for permission to attend any real ringing and for Zoom and Ringing Room details.
